Are Bible characters perfect?

There were no “functional” families in the Bible. After all what do we mean by “functional.” Do we mean that they don’t make mistakes? I doubt it.

broken

The Bible uses flawed characters to let us know that no one is perfect. Yet somehow, God used them to do his will. Some of them went dragging their feet but they went. We are all flawed but God can use us. If you let him!

Who has moved?

“If God seems far away from you who has moved?”

I found this in one of my old journals. Author? me, unknown?

move back

God never moves. God remains with us no matter what. We are the ones who drift away and then feel lost. When we are in the depths and feel abandoned by God… God has not moved. Our perspective is the problem. We have to remind ourselves that God is where he/she has always been. We have moved.

Faith is a choice

faith is the thing

Faith is not something you can explain to someone else. It is a step into the unknown. Science needs everything to be provable. Faith accepts something that cannot be proved. It is a choice….a decision and it may have to be decided over and over. It can be slippery if we attach it to feelings. It is not a feeling but a choice.

We earn it

Pay to all what is due them—taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.
Respect-quote
Our behavior sets the tone for how we will be treated. These things in the quote are earned. Christ had respect for everyone he saw. No one was beneath him. Even the homeless on the streets deserve respect.

Today

There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will.     Epictetus

today

We definitely spend too much time thinking and worrying about the future. The future is not in our control. Today…NOW is the only thing that we have. God’s in his heaven. Embrace today!

Infinite

If God made us in his image, we have certainly returned the compliment.    Voltaire

infinate God

We must beware of deciding what God thinks and what he will do. We want God to do what we want. God is not us. God’s ways are not ours. Don’t create God in your image.

Forgive

Esdras is in The Apocrapha a section of writings not always included in protestant Bibles but usually found in Catholic texts.
forgive
For our sins have risen higher than our heads, and our mistakes have mounted up to heaven
There is no one who hasn’t made mistakes. If anyone claims that they haven’t they are mistaken. Some mistakes are minor and some of monumental proportions. Some don’t matter and some cause profound hurt. When we think about mistakes we also need to consider forgiveness. Forgiveness can be hard but we are called to forgive no matter what. We may have to work at it and it may take time.
but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Coincidence or miracle?

A while back I wrote about how we can view something as a coincidence or a miracle. I told about one of my friends who says that the “arangels” are the organizers of wonderful happenings. These things are God moments.

My husband and I have some repairs to our house planned and have set aside money for this but you know how plans go. Another major repair came up and we didn’t plan for it. However, the arangels planned for my son and friends of his to take on the repair and we will only have to pay for parts. This is a God moment. It is a big job and my son scarcely has time with his own work schedule to take on anything else but he did.

coincidence

Sometimes things happen that we can just call coincidence…things just falling into place…but I prefer to call them miracles.

How big is God?

Too small

If you can’t believe in God the chances are your God is too small.   J.B. Phillips

We keep trying to make God understandable. We want a God who thinks like us and behaves like us. However, God is much bigger than that. So big that we can’t even begin to understand him/her. God’s ways are beyond our ability to grasp. Stop trying to make God so small.

Light/Darkness

light shines

When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.   Charles A. Beard

This quote reminds me of one from my journal of saved quotes.

Now that my house has burned down I can see the moon more clearly.  From the movie Hiroshima

Both of these quotes remind us that light penetrates darkness. In the worst of times there is hope.
