Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant. Robert Louis Stevenson
A lot of times I hear people say: “I prayed for my friend and nothing happened.” “I tried to talk to someone about God but it didn’t change anything.” That may be what we see but we may never know the final result. It is amazing years later to have someone say: “you helped me when I was down.” We need to keep on spreading those seeds.
Prayer: Loving Jesus, you know that we have become self conscious talking about you to others. We feel uncomfortable and usually can’t see any result. Remind us to spread the seed and let you do the rest. Amen
If He laid down His life for us, is it not the least we can do to lay down ours for Him? If He bore the cross and died on it for me, ought I not to be willing to take it up for him? Dwight Lyman Moody
What does it mean to “take up the cross?” He adds “and follow me.” Am I really following him? He loved and related to all people. He ate with tax collectors (who were hated by the people); did not rebuke a woman who was unclean for touching him. He went against the grain for his time. How are we doing?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, so many are outcast s in our own time. Even naming them can set us off. Help us to follow you more closely and learn to love even the people we now shun. Amen
So many times we long for answers. Why is there such evil in the world? Why do people kill others? Why do children have to die of cancer? There are so many questions and few answers. Faith is trusting that God loves us and wants the best for us even thought there are no answers.
We are waiting. Most of the time we don’t wait patiently. We want things to happen now! We are poor examples of your love but we know there is better to come. We have to wait for the goodness that on the way. Spend the time in advent looking forward to the birth of Christ. A blessed baby sent to redeem us and show us how to live each day.
Amazing God, you knew we didn’t understand you and so you sent your son. Thank you. AMEN
Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but a manner of traveling. ——Margaret Lee Runbeck
Our thinking about happiness seems out of sync. We look for happiness to bowl us over but it’s not like that. Happiness can live with us on our journey if we let it. Will I choose to see the good in things today? Will I thank God for my blessings acknowledging them myself? To me, this is the crux of the matter. Most of the time happiness is our choice. Sure, we do have bad times but my perspective colors my journey. Choose to be happy!
God of love, you have given us the chance to choose happiness. Help us to see it in our lives. AMEN
There are no shortcuts to any place worth going. ——-Helen Keller
We always want life to be easy. Sometimes it is….sometimes not. The struggles that we encounter help us to grow. We learn from them. We would be less than we are without them. Some of the most famous poets, writers and artists drew inspiration from their struggles. Helen Keller is a good example.
Just remember… no matter what God is with us.
Ever present God, we thank you for your promise to be with us through our trials. AMEN
It doesn’t matter if you believe in angels. The question is do you believe that miracles still happen? I happen to be one of the people who do. Our expectation of miracles is skewed. The Bible only included major miracles but there are the everyday ones. The ones that you only see if you have your eyes open to God’s works. Pay attention. There still are miracles!
Amazing God, you didn’t stop miracles happening. They still do. Thank you for your loving hand in the world. AMEN
To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts..……Henry David Thoreau
We may be the person who makes or breaks someone’s day. Just a little kindness spread around can make a world of difference. A kind word, a smile, a hello may boost someone out of a bad day. We can make other’s days brighter. Try it!
Loving God, help us to see those around us and to reach out in kindness. It may be the only bright thing in their day.
God does not expect us to go around with gloomy faces. Who would want to be a Christian if we all looked like that? God wants us to look for the good and rejoice in it.
Loving God, help us to seek the good in life instead of concentrating on the bad. AMEN
