Turn the other cheek

“An eye for an eye will only make the world blind” ~Mahatma Gandhi

This is an oft quoted piece from the Bible found in Exodus and in Matthew 5 after the beatitudes. The meaning is different that what we usually think. It is about retaliation but calls for only an eye to be taken for an eye. No more. In Matthew Jesus tells us what we really need to do.

eye

Matthew 5: 38-42

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41 and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42 Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.

Loving Lord, you call us to let go of our anger and put revenge aside. Help us to do so. AMEN

God’s power

bible-verse-2-corinthians-my-grace-is-sufficient-for-you-for-my-power-is-made-perfect-in-weakness11

This has been a difficult time for me but God’s grace is always with us. What a wonderful verse to understand that God understands our weaknesses and continues to hold us with his love.

Loving God, we are so blessed that you are always with us. We can feel your grace and love in the most difficult times. AMEN

Do we recognize happiness

Perhaps if one really knew when one was happy one would know the things that were necessary for one’s life. ——————-Joanna Field

I am not sure we know what true happiness is. We keep looking for something perfect when it is the day to day pleasures that bring happiness. God does not expect us to live a life of sadness and sorrow.  He wants us to be happy.  See the small things in each day.

Generous God, you give us small pleasures each day. You show us moments of happiness. Help us to see them. AMEN

God will hold you up!

This song has been around for a while and is one of my favorites. It is by Michael Joncas.

This video cites the singer but not the writer.

God is always there to hold us up.

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord
Who abide in His shadow for life
Say to the Lord, “My Refuge
My Rock in Whom I trust.”

Refrain
And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of His Hand

You need not fear the terror of the night
Nor the arrow that flies by day
Under his wings your refuge
His faithfulness your shield

For to His angels He’s given a command
To guard you in all of your ways
Upon their hands they will bear you up
Lest you dash your foot against a stone

Refrain
And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of His Hand

God expects

No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the star, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new heave to the human spirit. ————————-Helen Keller

All through the Bible God calls on the most unexpected people to do wondrous things. Usually they start by saying no I can’t but God doesn’t take no for an answer. He knows what we can do and expects us to do it. Never think you are not good enough for what God plans. You CAN do it!.

yes-you-can

Expectant God, you have made us and know what we can do. Help us to see that too. AMEN

The table

The table is a meeting place, a gathering ground, the source of sustenance and nourishment, festivity, safety, and satisfaction. ————-Laurie Colwin

We gather around our tables with our friends and families. This is the place we feel at home. It is a place of comfort.

As Christians our table, our place of comfort is at the communion table. It is where our Christian family meets and feeds on the word of God and the wine and bread. It is our home.

Loving God, you provide our spiritual home among other Christians. Remind us to meet at the table and feast. AMEN

Too important?

Anybody can observe the Sabbath but making it holy surely takes the rest of the week. ————-Alice Walker

Our society has almost done away with the Sabbath. God called it a day of rest. God realized that we would need time to rest our bodies and our souls. Today we think that we can’t stop. We have too much to do. Guilt comes over us if we stop. This is arrogance. This is thinking that we are so important that the world can’t do without us for a few hours.

We must take time to rest our souls and bodies. I promise..we are not that important.

Patient God, you watch us struggle to keep up 24/7. You know we need the rest. Help us to see that too. AMEN

Counting on God

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.
Today I have thought of this verse that was one of my grandmother’s favorites. Next week my husband goes to the Mayo Clinic for knee surgery and this verse speaks to me. The path to this surgery has been difficult but God has been in the midst of it and I am sure still is. He is a God we can trust. Don’t doubt that He is with you through all things.

Loving God, we thank you for you promises to us. Help us to see you in everything we do. AMEN
Please add my husband Hap to your prayers for good results. Thank you

Is everything everything?

There must be more to life than having everything. ————-Maurice Sendak

There are many ways to look at having everything but for our culture it usually means having money and or fame. We make idols of the rich and famous. We see them as happy and complete.

If you read about most of them their lives are not what we think. The money and the fame don’t make up for what they are really missing…. a relationship with God. Only God can fill that space inside of us that feels to empty.

God fills

Infinite God, you are what fills and completes us. Help us to draw closer to you each day. AMEN

Be welcoming

Hospitality is a form of worship —————————The Talmud

Welcoming people is so important. I have been to churches where no one spoke to me. Obviously I was in no hurry to go back.

Being together over a dinner table is so important. Meals bring us closer together. Jesus left us with a meal for us to share. It is the ultimate hospitality.

Greet people in love and share meals of food and meals from the altar.

Generous God, help us to be as generous to others as you have been to us. AMEN
