Stillness

Work is not always required….there is such a thing as sacred idleness, the cultivation of which is now fearfully neglected.     George Macdonald

We have to take time to be still. Too often busy-ness keeps us moving all the time. Only in stillness can we hear the things God wants to whisper to us. Take the time for stillness and quiet so you can hear God.

How big is God?

Too small

If you can’t believe in God the chances are your God is too small.   J.B. Phillips

We keep trying to make God understandable. We want a God who thinks like us and behaves like us. However, God is much bigger than that. So big that we can’t even begin to understand him/her. God’s ways are beyond our ability to grasp. Stop trying to make God so small.

Do it!

God give us work til our life shall end and life til our work is done.      New Zealand Prayer Book

Doing-Gods-Work-And-Accepting-The-Challenge-e1487617979322

We need to recognize the work that God calls us to do and then we need to do it. The thing is we frequently don’t want to do the thing that is needed. We want to do something simpler, more noticeable, more fun or more appreciated. God may be calling us to do something we don’t want to do. This is not the time to duck and run. See the task and do it.

Light/Darkness

light shines

When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.   Charles A. Beard

This quote reminds me of one from my journal of saved quotes.

Now that my house has burned down I can see the moon more clearly.  From the movie Hiroshima

Both of these quotes remind us that light penetrates darkness. In the worst of times there is hope.

Not just in church

Our concern is not how to worship in the catacombs but how to remain human in the skyscrapers.         Abraham J. Heschel

John-3-11

Do we only worship in designated worship spaces? Do we take out God our into the streets. Christ did not call us to stay in church. He called us to care for the sick and needy. Most of the time they are not in our churches. Do we take our care outside the walls?

Hope

Every thing that is done in the world is done by hope.     Martin Luther

hope-bible-verses-860x450_c

Hope is a gift given to us by a loving God. When we are drowned in anxiety and fear hope pulls us up. God’s presence in our lives is the best hope of all. Never forget God’s love and live with hope.

Do something!

A man of words and not or deeds, is like a garden full of weeds.       English Proverb

Too often I see Christians not following through with the things Christ called us to do. If you have money it is much easier to throw money at a problem rather than do anything yourself. To get dirty actually helping is not what we want to do. Maybe those homeless will fix themselves.

do something

Don’t ever forget that we are called to actually do something!

A sense of humor

asenseofhumorisgods-minLately I have realized that I would not have survived this long without a sense of humor. Often it is better to laugh than to cry. We have to remember that it is hardest to laugh at ourselves and our own mistakes. Laughing reduces stress. When things go wrong stop and think about your choice. Can it be laughter?

Proverbs 17:22

A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones.

Regret

The other day I saw a man on the side of the road. He was bent over and was holding a small sign. The traffic was moving and I didn’t have time to read the sign or to give him the package I keep in my car to give to those in need. I have regretted this since that day. I should have stopped and held up traffic and handed him that pack.

We have a responsibility to each other. We are a community. The things that I do affect others. I am responsible for helping others. God has reminded us of this so many time that we ought to get it by now.

God is in charge

Today I have some worries that I need to let go. It is so easy to get wrapped up in worry and it does no good at all.  Jesus reminds us that there is no reason to worry. God is in charge.

God is in control

Matthew 6:25-34

[ Do Not Worry ] “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?
