Keep quiet—walk away

Conflict cannot survive without your participation. ————-Wayne Dyer

The Bible shows us how to avoid conflict. It tells us to turn the other cheek. Not an easy thing to do. For most of us it has nothing to do with physical violence but instead using words (that may not be too kind). A person can’t argue by themselves. If you can’t keep your temper walk away. Words can hurt and cannot be taken back whether out loud or on social media.

walk away

Gracious Lord, you have called us to kindness and love. Help us to remember this when faced with unpleasant situations. AMEN

Questions and answers

Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple. ———-Dr. Seuss

Sometimes we want to intellectualize our faith. We continue to ask question that have no logical answers. Questions that can’t be proved or disproved. We need to sit in silence and listen for God. God could answer all those questions but he knows we don’t need to know. We just need to trust in him.

All knowing God, we always want to be able to prove things and have understandable answers. Help us to trust that you know best. AMEN

Mercy

Pope Francis insists that mercy is at the very top of the Christian hierarchy of great truths and everything falls apart whenever mercy is displaced by anything else or anything less.

The dictionary defines mercy as: compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm.

The Old Testament. Mercy: A Part of God’s Nature. Although people have the capacity for showing mercy, especially toward those with whom they already have a special relationship, a lack of mercy is more natural to the human condition. Mercy is, however, a quality intrinsic to the nature of God. It is for this reason that in some situations “merciful” was a sufficient description of God. from: Baker’s Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology

Mercy is something we don’t always see as related to us. We think of a courtroom with a judge. But sometimes we are the judge. We can choose to be hard-nosed or forgiving. Notice that the dictionary includes forgiveness in the definition. Forgiving a hurt is mercy. We have opportunities to forgive and it is sometimes difficult to do. We may have to show forgiveness but work for a while on really forgiving.

Merciful God, you have forgiven us so much. Help us to show the mercy that you so readily give. AMEN

Doubt

FeynmanRichard-Doubt500x250px

Faith is not the opposite of doubt. The opposite of doubt is disbelief. Doubts make us ask questions. They make us struggle, study more and learn. Doubts stretch us and make us grow. Don’t be afraid of having doubts. We can’t know everything. Only God has all the answers.

Amazing God, forgive us for thinking that we can know all the answers. Help us to continue to learn and grow in our knowledge of you. AMEN

Journey

The only sin which we never forgive in each other is a difference of opinion—————–Ralph Waldo Emerson

We are so good at sticking to our own opinion and rejecting the opinions of others. Each of us is on a journey toward God and each of us is at a different place in that journey. Be mindful of the thoughts of others and be careful not to put rocks in their path. Your thoughts may be good ones but they may not be ready to hear them.

Amazing God, help each of us on our journey toward you and remind us not to hinder others. AMEN

Bad days

Sad-Quotes-1Today has not been a good day. I have lost an important keepsake. These things happen to us. Not everything is good. The thing is when we have these days God is there to hold us and cry with us. He will join us in our sorrow and bring us peace.

Caring God, you will be with us when we have bad days. You will wipe away our tears. We thank you. AMEN

Moods and feelings

faith lewis

Our feelings and moods change from day to day. Today we may feel that God is close and our faith is strong. Tomorrow God may feel distant and we question. Sometimes our faith is challenged by something painful and we may back away from God. But God never changes and is always there waiting.

Present God, thank you for putting up with our moods and feelings. Thank you for always being present no matter what we feel. Help us to see your presence. AMEN

Dive in!

You give but little when you give your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.-——–Kahil Gibran in “The Prophet.”

I have noticed over the years that there are times when something needs to be done and people do what I can”throwing money at it.” They have no desire to get involved or take on work but they are willing to pay for it. That is so much easier. You are really only connected and engaged with a need when you are willing to take it on yourself.

dive in

Forgiving God, help us to dive in and truly help. AMEN

The hole

The soul hardly ever realizes it , bu whether he is a believer or not, his loneliness is really a homesickness for God. ——–Hubert ban Zeller

God holeWe each have a God shaped hole inside of us just waiting to be filled. When we don’t reach for God we try to find other things to fill it: money, power, things, sex, drugs. We think that these things will help but they never do. Look carefully at the number of well known figures who are unhappy. Reach for God. That is the only thing to fill the hole.

Loving God, you know that we are empty without you. Help us to seek you instead of the things that will never help. AMEN

We turn to God

Human misery is too great for men to do without faith.————–Heinrich Heine

I have often wondered what people do who have no faith to support them. What do they turn to for help with terrible things happen? I cannot imagine life without God as my support..can you?
