Seek the good

abelincoln

God does not expect us to go around with gloomy faces. Who would want to be a Christian if we all looked like that?  God wants us to look for the good and rejoice in it.

Loving God, help us to seek the good in life instead of concentrating on the bad. AMEN

Our guide book

The Bible contains the word of God it is NOT the word of God.  ——-unknown

How important is the Bible for us? Very important. It is our guide book on our spiritual journey. It tells the stories of those who have gone before. It lays out the path for us in the person of Jesus Christ….but in itself is not the journey.

Amazing God, you have given us much wisdom in the Bible. Help us to read and digest it’s meaning and …most importantly… apply it to our lives. AMEN

What is grace?

1-13-Grace-DefinitionDo we really understand grace? Do we get that this gift is greater than any we have ever received or ever will. The fact that grace is a free gift of God does not remove us from responsibility. It is not a get out of jail free card. Grace carries with it the fact that God loves us so much that we are given this gift before we respond…..and respond we must. Living out the message of Christ and follow his word is our response.

Generous God, you are willing to give us the gift of grace without any promise on our part. Help us to respond with hearts full of love and willingness to be your hands and feet. AMEN

God’s power

This has been a difficult time for me but God’s grace is always with us. What a wonderful verse to understand that God understands our weaknesses and continues to hold us with his love.

Loving God, we are so blessed that you are always with us. We can feel your grace and love in the most difficult times. AMEN

The table

The table is a meeting place, a gathering ground, the source of sustenance and nourishment, festivity, safety, and satisfaction. ————-Laurie Colwin

We gather around our tables with our friends and families. This is the place we feel at home. It is a place of comfort.

As Christians our table, our place of comfort is at the communion table. It is where our Christian family meets and feeds on the word of God and the wine and bread. It is our home.

Loving God, you provide our spiritual home among other Christians. Remind us to meet at the table and feast. AMEN

The field

My soul is a broken field, plowed by pain. ————Sara Teasdale

This may sound depressing. The thought that my soul is in this state. But think about that field. It is plowed by God and ready for planting. It is rich soil and can produce food to eat or flowers for beauty. It is ready to receive the seed that God will plant.

plowed field

Creative God, we wait for the seed… your gift to bring our soul, not only to fruition but also, to joy. AMEN

The breath of life

The Bible shows a relentless movement toward intimacy and divine union between Creator and creatures. For this to happen, there needs to be some degree of compatibility, likeness, or even “sameness” between the two parties. In other words, there has to be a little bit of God in us that wants to find Itself. —–Richard Rohr

The must be something of God in us. God created us and breathed into us the breath of life. His breath. In doing so we became a part of him. His breath remains with us forever.

Creative God, you gave us life and a part of yourself. Help us to acknowledge this part of us and give thanks. AMEN

Be a steward

Nature is perfect, wherever we look, but man always deforms it. ———J.C.F. von Schiller

God made us stewards of the earth. He made us and then expected us to care for everything else. Instead we listened to the part about being in charge and forgot the rest. If we can’t learn to be stewards (dictionary: manage or look after another’s property) before long there will be nothing to manage.

Abundant God, your plan was for us to care for your creation. Help us to do just that. AMEN

Worry

Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength. –——Corrie ten Boom

I think tonight I will just refer us to Matthew about worry.

Matthew 6:27-29 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

27 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?[a] 28 And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.

Worry is a waste of time.

Lord, you care more for us than we can ever imagine. Thank you. Help us to know that you will be with us each moment. AMEN

See the light

When it is dark enough, you can see the stars. ———————Charles A. Beard

Sometimes our lives can be filled with darkness. Nothing is going right. Life seems unmanageable. But it is true. When we can go outside, away from lights, we can see the stars to clearly. The trick is that we have to trust enough to go out and look up. God’s light will be visible to us if we just look. It only takes a little bit of light to change everything.

darkness (1)

Amazing God, you created the light and the darkness and are present in both. When all we can see is darkness help us to look for your light. AMEN
