The Earth and All That is Therein

Trees are the earth’s endless effort to speak to the listening heaven.

Rabindranath Tagore

trees2

Have you ever sat in a forest and listened to the wind through the trees? The sound is like angels whispering. I love this sound. How horrible it would be if there were no longer any trees…no longer any forests. We humans were given dominion over all the earth. What have we done with it? We a are growing close to extinguishing ourselves. How can we be so selfish? The suffering will be in the generations to come. Think about that.

Glorious God, you created the world and chose us to care for it. Help us to see what we are doing before it is too late.

Sharing Heals

In our won woundedness, we can become a source of life for others.

Henri Nouwen

healing

One of the things I have learned in life is that the trials that I have encountered have meaning. My understanding of others has grown with each trial. God uses our experiences by using them to help others. Don’t be afraid to share your griefs and your trials with others. Your experience can be healing for them.

Healing God, remind us that what we have learned in our journey can be used to heal others. Cod calls us to use those experiences for the good of other. AMEN

Kindness Counts

Luke 6:42

how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye.

We are so quick to judge others. It’s as if the sins of others are so much worse than our sins. We certainly need to take ourselves to task before we talk about others. We Christians seem to be really good at pointing fingers. That hypocrisy is one of the reasons that people are turning their backs on organized religion. Remember you may be the best example of a Christian that someone has met.
Forgiving God, help us to leave judgement to you and show kindness and love to others. AMEN

Know You Are Loved

The love of liberty is the love of others; the love of power is the love of ourselves.

William Hazlitt

power corrupts

There are so many people striving for power. It seems to be an  addiction that consumes everything. . Nothing satisfies except more power. I wonder if it even satisfies those who become president.  In the struggle to be on top people are not important. This is such a devastating way to live. I’m not even sure that those who live this way actually love themselves. This is not the way God calls us to live. We are called to love God and love others. In the process we are also asked to love ourselves because God love us. His love provides us with all the self worth we need. We just have to recognize it.

Loving God, thank you for seeing us as your children and for loving us. Help us to know your love and be fulfilled.

Lean On God

We could never learn to be brave and patient, if there were only joy in the world.
Helen Keller

I am sure that I would not be happy in a world where everything is perfect. I’m afraid it would be boring. God never promised us that our whole life would be easy or free of problems. He just promised to be with us. I always think of the 23rd Psalm. “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil…for thou art with me.” God is with us each and every day no matter what.

psalm28_8-1

Loving God, thank you for always being with us. Help us to understand that you are there and that we can lean on you.

This is the Day

“The most painful state of being is remembering the future, particularly the one you’ll never have.

 Soren Kierkegaard

all we have

We spend so much time thinking about the future. We make numerous plans and live in them. If only we could learn to live each day and have an awareness of it. So much slips by us. The joys of each day are not noticed. God gives us each day. If only we could pay attention and be grateful.

Compassionate God, forgive us for our failure to give thanks for what we have and help us to  be more aware each day of the gifts we have. AMEN

Do Something!

We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily difference we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.
Marian Wright Edelman, activist

Small-Changes

Too often we want to make the big splash….do something that changes the world. Waiting for that big thing to come along we just sit. The sad thing is that when we just sit nothing is done at all. God calls us to do something. He starts with love God and love our neighbor. Small things do matter. I can’t change the world alone but how can I tell what one small kind action can do. We need to do what we can. Start with love.

Amazing God, you have given us the secret for change. Help us to recognize it. AMEN

Only Love

_only_love__by_nonnetta

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

Buddha

The light of a candle is not the only thing that can be shared. Love is never diminished by being shared. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger. This is what Christ is all about. Love , love , love….if only we could stop all the anger and violence and just concentrate on loving each other. The world would change.

Gracious God, do you despair of us ever getting the message? Please help us to forget all the complex issues and just understand the message. Love is the way. AMEN

Don’t Starve

Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!

From Auntie Mame

live itThis is so true. I wonder how often we stop to savor just being alive. Are we thankful for what we have instead of longing for what we don’t have.? Most of us in this county are so blessed compared to those living in third world countries. My husband and I live in Panama for a while (many years ago)  and it made me decide that everyone in this country should have to live  in a place of horrible poverty and need for a least a year.

Take time to be aware of your blessings. Thank God always.

Loving God, forgive us for our lack of vision. We do not see the good around us as often as we should. Help us to see our blessings and give thanks. AMEN

Accentuate the Positive

Finally breather, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Philippians 4:8

For some reason this reminds me of the tune “accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative.”  Thinking on negative things makes us negative. It creates a mindset. If we are constantly dwelling on the bad things that can happen or on how everything seems to be going from bad to worse then that is how we feel. God calls us to be joyful in all things. As another song say “put on a happy face” It may not make the bad things go away but it just may make you feel better.

choosing-to-be-positive-and-having-a-grateful

Trustworthy God, we know so little and try to understand way beyond out capabilities. Help us to leave things to you and just say as said by Hildegard of Bingen “all will be well, and all will be well, and all things will be well.”
